causing a flood, in less than 10 years. However, every
heater has an anode, a magnesium tube that attracts
impurities and corrodes itself instead of the tank.
Have anode replaced ,every 15 years 00 years WAk a
10-year guarantee). Most anodes are rigid, but flexible
ones are available for heaters W16"t 6 in. of

IMPROVENEENTS THIAT LOWER HOT WNIFER COSTS
Ading more than you need for hot water is the same
as pouring energy dollars down the drain. Here and
on the following pages, you'll find hands-on instructions
that show you how to fix leaky faucets, install watenconserving
devices, and investigate more economical ways of heating
water plus two energy-efficient suggestions for getting
hot water where you need it. Over time, you can expect
energy saAngs to repay your investment in these measures,
sometimes generously.
ADDING A MONEY-SAVING FAUCET AERATOR
A faucet aerator works by mixing air into the water
stream. The result is a high-pressure flow that uses
less water than a. solid stream. An added beriefit
is that an aerated stream does not splash. In normal
household use, aer& tors installed on all your
kitchen and bathroom faucets can save the BTUs needed
to heat several hundred gallons of hot water a year.
For maximum effect, look for a kitchen aerator rated
for a flow of 2.5 gallons per minute (GPM) or less,
and for a bathroom aerator rated as low as I GPM.
Replacement aerators are generally made to fit faucets
with spouts that are threaded either on the inside,
or the outside. Some swivel so that you can direct
the stream where you wish; others have a built-in
control that allows you to interrupt the flow- without
also affecting water temperature. An avaporator comes
with a rubber or plastic washer. To install the aerator
on a spout with inside threads, place the washer on
the aerator, discard the washer when fitting the aerator
to a spout with outside threads. Screw the aerator
on hand tight. (If the faucet and aerator threads
don't match, purchase an adapter from your local home
center or plumbing supply dealer.)
REPLACING A WASTEFUL SHOWER HEAD
Installing a low-flow shower head rated at no more
than 2.5 GPM can be one of the most effective ways
to save money spent to heat water. Start by taping
the jaws of a pipe wrench to avoid marring shiny.
finishes. Use the ,wrench to keep the showier arm
from turning while you tuiscrew, the old shower head
using an adjustable wrench or a second taped pipe
«Tencb. The new shower head screws directly onto
the shower arm Lmless it has a ball joint at the end.
In that case, you'll need a standard half-inch threaded
shower head adapter. To install the adapter, wrap
one end with pipe-thread tape and screw it tightly
into the ball joint. Apply pipe-thread tape to the
shower arm or the other end of the adapter, then screw
on the new shower head hand tight using any washers
supplied by the manufacturer. If water leaks from
the joint, tighten the new shower head with the tools
you used to loosen the old one.
