DiFIVE QUICK QUESTIONS
TO ASK ABOUT YOUR DISHWASHER:
1. Does this unit have a preheat cycle? You may not
need or want this feature. You'll read more about
it in the following chapter.
2. Does this unit have an energy saver feature? Sometime
you
may not need or want the heat on during the drying
cycle.
3. Does it have a plastic or a porcelain tub? Porcelain
may last longer.
4. Are there interchangeable colored front panels?
Nice feature when redecorating.
S. What is the water consumption? The more water it
uses, the more it costs to run.
Remember 95% of the people didn't use their dish
washers properly. Here are the secret ingredients.
• Always run the hot water in the sink for three
or four minutes before turning on the dishwasher.
If you do not do this the first water into your dishwasher
will be cold water that has been sitting in the pipes.
This water is critical to the cleaning process. It
is necessary for the water temperature to be 140"
F for the detergent to dissolve properly and clean
and sanitize effectively.
But water also leaves spots on glassware. Hot water
dissolves the detergent easily on your glassware.
• The minimum amount of soap to do a proper
job. Using too much soap can also cause etching of
glassware. The formula for proper soap usage is one
teaspoon of powdered soap (I prefer powder) for each
grain of hardness in the water,
If your water has 10 grains of hardness, use 10 teaspoons
of dishwasher detergent. If you don't know how hard
your water is, call your local water company and ask.
Most cities with treated water have about 10 grains
of hardness. If you have a well, or can't get the
in dishwasher, you can probably get a testing kit
from your local hardware store.
Once you know the formula, mark a measuring cup, or
better still, find one that holds the exact amount
and use it for your dishwasher detergent exclusively.
• Never store your powdered dish washing detergent
under the sink. Under the sink is the most humid spot
in your house. The dry detergent absorbs water like
a sponge. The humid conditions make the detergent
solidify into rock hard chunks which never dissolve
properly and create havoc on your fine China and glassware.
The proper way to store dish washing detergent is
in a plastic container with an air tight lid on a
shelf far from the sink.
Always rinse the dishes before you put dishes in the
dishwasher. Some of the dishwasher manufacturers that
their super doper machines rinse the dishes for you.
They will. The only problem is that some of this waste
can plug up the filters or impede water flow through
the spray ports.
A dishwasher is not a garbage disposer. It has not
been designed to act like a garbage disposer. You
should not expect it to act like one. If you listen
to the advertising claims instead of me, that's OK.
But remember, you, not me or the manufacturer, will
be stuck with the service call.
• Load the dishwasher properly. Proper loading
is very important to the dishwasher's ability to clean.
If you place upside down bowls in the bottom rack,
the water spraying from the bottom arm can deflect
into the water reservoir at the bottom of the dishwasher
and cause a wave. This can create a door leak as well
as ineffective cleaning action.
